Robert Welch trained at Hull College of Art and Manchester Polytechnic; he lives and works in London and his work has been exhibited frequently in the UK, but also internationally. At the summer_11 show some of his earlier work will be shown, wonderful paintings of harbour-sides and interior studies.
The curator, Kapil Jariwala has written the following about his work:
'Robert Welch makes some of the most sublime paintings, he brings serenity through his subtle understanding of colour and the bold simplification of drawing and shape. There is a sense of anticipation in these paintings, they have been cleared of clutter to herald the viewer to the world of the painting, a pure world of colour.' and Tim Hilton in The Guardian said of his work:
'I recommend the sturdy naturalistic paintings by Robert Welch. He is one of the most serious of our figurative artists, yet his vision owes a lot to his abstractionist contemporaries.'
He and his more recent painting was the subject of a recent profile by Mali Morris, RA in the renowned painting magazine, Turps Banana.
